Album Review: “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” Dream Theater

Dream Theater’s tenth studio album “Black Clouds & Silver Linings,” released by Roadrunner Records in 2009, marks the fifth anniversary of its release.  “The Shattered Fortress”  displays guitarist John Petrucci’s playing of going with a flow of Metallica to Pink Floyd and eventually Steve Vai or Joe Satriani.  “Best of Times,” Petrucci suddenly comes out like a Jason Becker  involved in progressive music.  Even music is played similarly in some parts of this song much like Led Zeppelin, which had a huge impact on Dream Theater’s style of playing.  As for “Court of Tuscany,” “A Change of Seasons,” “Under a Glass Moon,” “Pull Me Under,” “Trial of Tears,” and “Constant Motion” all clash to create the type of progressive music environment DT loves.  Many fans of this band will be impressed.  If you did not get this album, go get it since it has fantastic music to cement the band’s musical foundation.  Sadly, this would drummer Mike Portnoy’s last appearance on a Dream Theater album.  [B]
